Baekma, a new standard chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflorum [D. morifolium]) cultivar, was released by National Horticultural Research Institute (NHRI), Rural Development Administration, Korea Republic, in 2004. The cross was made in 2001 between Baeksun, a summer flowering cultivar, and Shinma, an autumn flowering cultivar. The characteristics are investigated from 2002 to 2004 for the evaluation and selection of this cultivar, including shading culture in summer and retarding culture in autumn. The natural flowering time of Baekma is late September, but year-round flowering is possible by shading and lighting. It has large flower, ~13.8 cm in diameter, the number of the petals is 254 and the shape of the outer petals is tubular. The flower is white, but shows light green in its centre at the early stage of flowering. The days to flower from short day treatment is ~51 in autumn..

Ilweol, a new chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflorum [Dendranthema morifolium]) cultivar, was released by the National Horticultural Research Institute (NHRI), Rural Development Administration (RDA), Korea Republic, in 2001. The cross was made in 1998 between Soneo, an anemone type cultivar bred earlier in NHRI, and 96B1-159, a breeding line of NHRI. The characteristics are investigated from 1999 to 2001 for the evaluation and selection of this cultivar, including shading culture in summer and retarding culture in autumn. The natural flowering time of Ilweol is early November, but year-round flowering is possible by shading and lighting. It has anemone type flowers, yellow petals and bright red brown flower centre. The diameters of flower and flower centre are 4.2 and 2.3 cm, respectively. The number of the petals is 30 and the days to flower from short day treatment is ~65 days in spring and summer season. Chowoo, a new yellow gerbera (Gerbera hybrida [Gerbera sp.]) cultivar, was developed from the cross Sardana x Salina followed by seedling and line selections at the Flower Breeding Research Institute, Gyeongnam Agricultural Research and Extension Services, Korea Republic, in 1999. Characteristics trials were conducted in 2001-02. Newly bred Chowoo showed yellow colour (RHS, 14-B), brown centre, semi-double type, and large flower. It also was in good harmony in ray floret colour and flower centre colour with stable flower shape. The vase life was 10.2 days. The average yield of Chowoo was 48.3 flowers per plant a year in greenhouse yield trails conducted in 2001-02. This cultivar was registered for commercialization in 2003. Chowoo would be cultured under greenhouse condition in Korea..

The objective of this work was distinguish the difference of 5 gladiolus cultivars (Gladiolus grandiflora 'White', 'Light Pink', 'Salmon Red', 'Red', 'Light Blue White') of different colors based on spectral reflectance of their petals. A spectrometer connected to a portable computer and configured for reflectance data acquisition in the 375 to 750 nm range was used to determine flower color. Based on the results, it was verified that outstanding and different changes in spectral reflectances was possible based on petal color. Thus, mainly in the region of visible spectrum, the reflectance can be used as a criterion for development of automatic systems for classification of gladiolus in a reliable and precise way.
